New slum policy sanctioned in Delhi

slum policy delhiDelhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal someway or the other always finds his own space in the frontline media. Besides controversies, the AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) leader has also done some significant and notable reforms in his regime. Fulfilling one of their poll promises in the land slide election win last year, AAP Government has approved the new slum and jhugg-jhopdi rehabilitation policy in Delhi.

The new policy states that the slums which came up before 2015 will not be demolished before providing proper rehabilitation for dwellers. The eligibility time period for the policy has been revised from June 4, 2009 to January 1, 2015. The dwellers need to have their name enlisted in atleast one of the electoral rolls from 2012 to 2015. New jhuggi’s built after January 2015 will not be valid in Delhi.

However, the case of JJ Clusters is different as those which have come up before January 1, 2006 will only be falling under the guidelines of the new policy. Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) will function as the nodal agency in rehabilitating the qualified dwellers before the jhuggis are removed. Attempts will be done to rehabilitate them in the same location or a location within the radius of 5 km.
