Surajkund International Crafts Mela 2015

Surajkund, a small reservoir in Faridabad, plays host to one of India’s premier crafts festival every year known as “Surajkund International Crafts Mela”. The vibrant festival is organized during the spring season from February 1 to 15 every year. Since its inception in 1987, thousands of artists have participated in the fest to showcase their immense talents. Art lovers from around the world pay this fest a visit. Food stalls, entertainment in the form of rhythms, dance and folk theatre, and stalls displaying crafts, make the Mela a one stop destination for all entertainment needs.

The fest is held with a different theme every year as its backdrop. The theme of this year has been narrowed down to the comparatively newly formed state of Chhattisgarh. The 29th edition of the Mela will be launched on 1st February by the honorary Chief Ministers of Chhattisgarh and Haryana. The Mela is expected to garner participation from over 18 countries.

Chhattisgarh is expected to put on display its historical heritage and unique culture in a majestic way. Chhattisgarh’s tribal heritage and culture, which is still very well preserved in the forests of Bastar, will be on showcase. The dance and art forms of Panthi, Rawat Nacha Pandwani, Chaitra Kaksar, Saila, Soowa etc, are just some of the art forms which will be performed by the artists from the state. Chhattisgarh is all set to dazzle and steal thousands of hearts at the Mela.

The partner nation of this year’s Mela is “Lebanon”. Lebanon will unveil and display its age old heritage of creating art and crafts. Su chefs, cultural troupes and craftspersons from Lebanon will entertain the visitors with their skills. 17 other countries who have confirmed their participation for the event thus far are Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Russia, Armenia, Thailand, Qatar, and Kuwait amongst others

Organizers of the event have gone all out and have left no stone’s unturned to market the event. 22 Metro stations in Delhi will act as the events ticketing partners. “Surajkund Mela”, a free mobile application for smartphones has been developed and made available for downloads. Users will be able to access latest information regarding the Mela and will also be able to book tickets via the app.

The Mela has all the ingredients of becoming the year’s most talked about event and is expected to provide Chhattisgarh the much needed and well deserved exposure.
